The course is suitable for NEU reps in all workplaces. \n\n\n\nReps Advanced covers areas such as: \n\n\n\n\nGaining enhanced skills in representation \n\n\n\nBuilding an effective case \n\n\n\nIdentifying and responding to a range of different management styles and practices \n\n\n\nDealing with change in the workplace\, including recognition and redundancy\n\n\n\nConsulting meaningfully with members\n\n\n\nDeveloping leadership skills \n\n\n\n\nThe course will run for 3 days\, and delegates will be required to attend all sessions to successfully complete the course. \n\n\n\nAs an NEU workplace rep\, you are entitled to paid time off to participate in the course. \n\n\n\nFor further advice on eligibility for this course\, on negotiating release from work\, or for assistance with access and expenses\, please contact the West Midlands Region office on west.midlands@neu.org.uk.

Using a realistic scenario\, participants will plan a campaign of resistance focussing on collective and individual representation of members. DESCRIPTION:This one-day course aims to give NEU reps and local officers an introduction to the framework of statutory\, contract and other law that surrounds our rights and entitlements at work. \n\n\n\nAs rep\, it will help you to: \n\n\n\n\nApproach employment law from a trade union perspective.\n\n\n\nUnderstand the basics of employment law including employment status\, statutory entitlements and employment rights.\n\n\n\nKnow how what constitutes a contract of employment and how it can be varied.\n\n\n\nUnderstand equality legislation and recognise discrimination.\n\n\n\nSupport members with atypical work patterns.\n\n\n\nUnderstand and identify the various forms of dismissal and other ways the employment relationship is ended.\n\n\n\nUnderstand how a knowledge of employment law can help you represent members more effectively and build the presence of the union in your workplace.\n\n\n\n\nThis course is aimed at reps who have completed the NEU Reps Foundation course and/or Being an Effective Rep Part 1 and Part 2 as well as the Reps Advanced course. \n\n\n\nAs a NEU workplace rep\, you are entitled to paid time off to participate in the course. For further advice on eligibility for this course\, on negotiating release from work\, or for assistance with access and expenses\, please contact the West Midlands Region office on west.midlands@neu.org.uk.

SUMMARY:NEU Reps: Negotiating & Bargaining Skills Course (Day 1)
DESCRIPTION:This two-day course aims to give reps an underpinning knowledge of negotiating and bargaining theory and practice\, and an opportunity to develop and improve their skills and confidence in negotiating and bargaining in the workplace. \n\n\n\nAs a rep\, it will help you to: \n\n\n\n\nApproach negotiation from a trade union perspective\, as a process of collective representation;\n\n\n\nUnderstanding the importance of workplace bargaining in the education sector today;\n\n\n\nDemystify the idea of negotiation and develop reps’ confidence to engage with workplace management;\n\n\n\nUnderstand the bargaining cycle as an essential basis for meaningful negotiation;\n\n\n\nKnow how to effectively represent the views and interests of members;\n\n\n\nUnderstand some of the underpinning principles and practices involved in successful negotiation;\n\n\n\nPrepare appropriately for negotiation;\n\n\n\nRecognise the various styles of negotiation and identify their own preferred approach(es);\n\n\n\nUnderstand the role of the relationship with the employer in negotiation;\n\n\n\nUndertake negotiation with greater confidence;\n\n\n\nGain an understanding of the importance of escalation in winning for members;\n\n\n\nAn understanding of how to navigate the challenges faced by Black\, women\, LGBT+ and disabled reps when negotiating and bargaining;\n\n\n\nUnderstand power in the workplace and how to shift the balance of power through collectivising;\n\n\n\nUse the outcome of successful negotiations to build the presence of the Union group in the workplace.\n\n\n\n\nPlease note: This is a two-day modular course. You must attend both days to receive accreditation. \n\n\n\nWho should attend: NEU Representatives who have attended at least one term previously\, the NEU Representatives Foundation and/or Advanced modules.  \n\n\n\nWe are particularly keen to encourage applications from NEU reps who identify as Black\, Disabled\, Women\, LGBT+. If you have any questions or specific requirements\, we are happy to discuss on a confidential basis – please contact us as above. \n\n\n\nAs a NEU workplace rep\, you are entitled to paid time off to participate in the course.
